Day 26 & 27
From Wisdom to Dillon, Mt.
Quite a change! We ride through flat plains, heading for the Beaverhead National Forest.
|
Oh Sh...! We follow ntl forests roads and, for the first time, we are
faced with a locked gate. How can someone install a gate on a public road sure beats me... ...U-turn...
|
After hitting another gate, we have to back track almost all the way to Wisdom.
An hour after getting started and 35 miles later, we are at exactly 3 miles from Wisdom,
on pavement...Just what we tried to avoid...
So, it'll be 15-20 miles on pavement to Jackson.
That's quite a stack!
The Wisdom/Jackson area is known to still stack their hay instead of baling it... |
|
Here's Jackson Mt, Pop: 38
Don't blink...
Surprise! They have a Polaris dealer on location! The lady there would'nt believe us,
at first, when we told her we were on our way to Mexico...

From Jackson we'll be following the Nez Perce historic trail. Supposed to be really
nice. According to the ranger who suggested that route, we should'nt have any problems to
reach Dillon.
No, the picture is'nt blurred...No, it's not humidity in the air...It's still the smoke
from the Idaho fires that's covering the horizon,
|
For sale: Perfect for the handyman in you! Superb view, free A/C, the
typical Montana real estate we can afford... Plenty of those around for us to choose
from... |
Yeah ! First 1,000 miles !
|
1,000 miles ridden without any major mishaps. |
Bof... |
Can we or can't we trust these maps? |
|
Some of those small forest roads are there all right, only
they're closed with locked gates... |
|
|
What's up with that?? Can't believe this sign right there in the middle of
nowhere...Guess the owner is expecting a lot of residential development in the area...Take a look here
Yesss!... Camping near Reservoir Lake! Perfect spot!

|
Here's what the road/trail looks like for this portion. Pretty barren. Again,
a change from plains and forests... |
WOW! We're really impressed by the care these workers take not to ruin the
pavement. A few old tires thrown under the dozer and it can cross over with no damage to
the road.
"Leave no trace"... |
|
We ride on a small portion of the Lewis and Clarke historic trail too. More
details, click here
These heroes from days gone by had to have loads of courage to explore those rugged
regions. |
|
We feel far from our homes when we see these entire prairies covered with nothing but
sage brush...
|
Oh! Here's our first cactus! In Montana! Did'nt expect that! |
We spend a couple of hours visiting the old gold mining town of Bannack. More
details click
here
In the 1900's it was a very properous and highly criminalised town.
There as been 7 people hangned here, including the Sheriff... |
|
Main street Bannack.
A treasure of history lies in these old buildings.
We hit the road again (litterally the main, paved road again...). destination Dillon.
Stop for the night at the KOA campground.
|
|
|
|
We use a portion of the Nez Perce historic trail...
!
...And a portion of the Lewis and Clarke historic trail.
