Day 30, 31, 32, 33 and 34
August 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th et 9th, 2007 |
Island Park, Idaho.
A campsite at the Flat Rock Campground US Forest service)...It's nice, looks quiet...
...You're thinking:" Oh! look at the nice place to camp"...But,
the highway runs just on the other side of those trees...And, as soon as we take off our
helmets, we can hear the trucks/cars zoom by. "Honey, do we still have some ear
plugs?"... |
|
The next day, here we are at the top of Sawtelle Peak!
Thanks Fred for bringning us up here.
Fred is a friend whom we met over the internet. And who helped us very much in tracing
our route in his neck of the woods. Not only did he send us maps, he also took his pick-up
truck and ATV and went scouting the trails for us as far as about 60 miles from his home,
just to pick the best one for us!
At 9900 ft elevation, you fell like you're on top of the world!
Yep! Quadtrek made the 6 o'clock news!

Again thanks to Freddy who contacted the local TV station abc affiliate)
so we could be on the news! |
Many times, following this TV report, people would stop by or walk up to us and say:
"Hey I saw you on the news, last night!"
Thanks also to the LOCAL NEWS 8 crew who came right to our campsite to interview us.
Great work! Much appreciated!
August 7th, 2007
It's not just all mountains in that area, there's also a number of very nice rivers. A
wildlife paradise!
We took the old railroad bed from Island Park to West-Yellostone with Freddy as a
guide. He sure knows the area! Since he also acts as a photographer, he not on the pic!
Hey! We,ve seen some grizzlies!!!!!!! IN West-Yellowstone!
But, I must say, they were at the "grizzly and wolfe discovery center" there,
in W-Yellowstone...Along with the wolves...
We would have loved to see some, in the wild...Not too close, of course, but still...We
slept in pretty remote country, far from towns, far from everything, but no luck...I'm
beginning to wonder if these creatures still exist, outside of zoos...
The West-Yellowstone area is the southern most portion of the grizzly bear habitat so,
if don't see one soon...Bof! There'll always be the black bears, wolves, mountain lions
and coyote to entertain us...
|
West-Yellowstone is a small tourist town more than anything,
so we do what tourists do and enjoy the tourist traps! |
|
|
So close to the park and not being able to visit it...It's a shame...ATVs are not allowed
in.
This park is a real beauty! We've been there in 2000. The geysers and hot springs are
truly amazing. Guess if you want photos, you'll have to go there yourself...
On the way back, Fred takes us to "two-top mountain", after a little detour,
mind you ;)
It gets windy at 8650ft elevation!!

Bof... |
Low speed internet... |

...Means more time computing, less time riding...We want high
speed!...We want high speed!... |

August 8th,
After 30 days of sleeping in our tent, to get 3 nights sleep in a soft bed, under a
solid roof is a much appreciated luxury.
Again we want to thank Freddy who kindly offered us to spend a few days at his summer
home even after he had to go back to work (after being sick for eating a green weiner ;).
We've spend numerous hours there working on the computer.
Mike and Juanita, Freds' charming neihgbours, invited us to share their dinner one day
and their breakfast, the next. Hummmmm...Mike sure likes to cook (outside ;) and it shows!
Three fires going on at once including the dutch oven cooked apple pie...DELICIOUS!
The next morning, I'm still full from that meal...
"Oh! You mean you're going to treat us to ham and eggs with hash browns...and
toasts?? I'll still be full by the time we get to Utah...
We are greeted like king and queen!! A million Thanks!
Fred, Mike, and Juanitas' hospitality is totally at the opposite of what some people
warned us about before we left. "Be careful with strangers, you don't know who you'll
run into". What we ran into was legendary Idaho hospitality!
August 9th,
In Island Park, we spent a lot of time doing the laundry, the groceries, and behind the
computer. We also met there some friendly, warm and very generous folks.
Finally...We spent about 4 hours struggling to transfert all that work onto our web
site because of a poor, intermittent internet connection. Something that usually takes 30
minutes...
So, could'nt ride a whole lot today...20 miles...
"Can we go out and ride, yet?..."
Hey, you know, Mexico is still quite a ways down...

|
|
There are litterally thousands of small trails we could
take. Luckily, we have Fred as guide.
